Most people would think you're a terrorist with that thing on.
 |
Re: Best mask for volcano ash?
a professional paint mask, which looks a lot like a gas mask, would be effective.
the point being to make sure none of those tiny particles make their way into your lungs ! i bought one about 20 years ago, cost $26. probably be $50 now. mine has filters that can be taken out and washed. |
Re: Best mask for volcano ash?
I lived near St. Helens in the early 80's. At least at the time, they didnt recommend any eye protection to visit the area after things had settled for a day or so.
Of course, they also just suggested good quality surgical masks for particulates, so take that for what it's worth! BTW: We visited the area a couple days after the first eruption... It blew again while we were coming down off the mtn, I have pics out our back car window of the mtn blowing up... great memories! ;) Had a 5 gal bucket of ash till we moved out of state and didnt want to ship it. Then I realized that a test-tube of the stuff was selling for $15 - $20 as a souviner in other states! Doh! |

A painter's mask/respirator, with the pre-filters, minus the chemical vapor filter cartridge part, would work fine. The light duty dust mask thingies with the aluminum strap nose pinch-clips are pretty worthless, imo.
